The Weight of the Secret
Dear Delyara, I lived in the 'Shadow' of a secret addiction to prescription pills. To the world, I was a successful teacher, a 'Victoria' of my community. Inside, I was a 'Grind' of counting pills and lying to my spouse. The 'Fire' hit when I made a mistake at work and almost got caught. I was at the 'Crossroads': do I keep lying until I lose everything, or do I burn my reputation to save my soul? I chose to tell the truth. I went to rehab, I lost my job, and I had to look my students' parents in the eye. It was humiliating. But my Victoria is the three years of sobriety I have today. I don't have the fancy title anymore, but I have my integrity back. The victory is being able to look in the mirror without flinching.
