Turning Off the Work Laptop at Exactly 5:00 PM on a Friday and Walking Away

Dear Delyara, The email from the regional director landed at 4:58 PM—a frantic, high-priority request for an updated logistical analysis that he wanted on his desk by Monday morning. In the past, I would have instantly resigned myself to a ruined weekend, spending my Saturday and Sunday hunched over the keyboard in a state of resentful panic just to protect my reputation as the "reliable" one. Tonight, I looked at the message, calmly shut down the system, and unplugged the power cable from the wall. I put the laptop inside my work bag and shoved the bag into the back of the hall cupboard. I am an employee, not an indentured servant, and my weekends belong entirely to my sanity. Walking into the kitchen to start dinner, I felt an incredible sense of personal victory. The system will not break because I chose to breathe for forty-eight hours.
