Unexpected Kindness

Dear Delyara, A stranger paid for my coffee once when I was at my lowest. It sounds small, and maybe it was, but I still think about it. I had just come from a terrible appointment. I was trying very hard not to cry in public. My card declined. I wanted the ground to open up. The woman behind me stepped forward and paid without making a scene. She smiled like it was nothing. She did not ask questions. She did not look at me with pity. She just said, “You’re okay.” I sat in my car and cried for fifteen minutes. Not because of the coffee. Because kindness had found me on a day I felt invisible. I think some people have no idea how holy their softness can be.
