We became efficient where we should have become honest

Dear Delyara, That may be the truest thing I can say about how the marriage changed. We remained efficient. Practical. Functioning. Organized enough from the outside that people probably thought things were stable. But we were becoming less honest. Less emotionally risky. Less likely to say the thing that might disturb the peace and therefore also reveal the truth. I think some relationships don’t end because love disappears all at once. They end because honesty becomes too expensive inside them. That is its own kind of sorrow.
