When money is tight, every small pleasure starts sounding morally suspicious

Dear Delyara, That’s one of the ugliest psychological effects of financial stress. A coffee becomes a question. A taxi becomes guilt. A haircut becomes a luxury trial. A small gift for yourself sounds like evidence in a courtroom against your character. Nothing stays simple. Every harmless thing has to pass through the filter of whether you have “earned” it or whether good, sensible adults would choose differently. I’m tired of living like comfort requires a defence. Not because I want to be careless. Because I want my humanity to stop sounding irresponsible in my own mind. When money gets too close to shame, the whole personality starts shrinking around it. That is what I am trying to undo.
